NO

I have a tore up little book with yellow pages falling apart from use on my bookshelf.  I have read and reread it many times, used it for sermon illustrations and Bible studies, leadership groups and individual counsel.  It is a little book of poems by Lois A. Cheney titled God Is No Fool and it is one of my all time favorite books.  I like the book especially because the poems are theologically correct and politically incorrect.  It is always refreshing for me to find truth artistically expressed.  Thanks to the internet and Amazon I was finally able to order a couple of used copies of the now out of print book.  I would encourage you to do the same too before there are none available.

What I also found on the internet while searching for the book was a claim and copyright by someone else of one of my favorite poems by Lois Cheney.  Apparently many people now using the poem give this person credit for her inspired work. Just to set the record straight, Claudia Minden Welsz did not write the poem And God Said “No”!  Lois A. Cheney did. There is a copyright on her book, God Is No Fool, which contains that poem published in 1977 by Pillar Books.  The copy right on the book of poems, is 1969 by Abington Press. Apparently Ms. Welsz re-copyrighted Cheney’s poem because her copyright is from 1980. And to plagiarism God says “NO!”  Below is the poem attributed to the true author:

And God Said No!

By Lois A. Cheney

I asked God to take away my pride, and God said “NO”.
He said it was not for Him to take away, but for me to give up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole, and God said “NO”.
He said her spirit is whole, her body is only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience, and God said “NO”.
He said that patience is a by-product of tribulation,
it isn’t granted, it’s earned.

I asked God to give me happiness, and God said “NO”.
He said He gives blessings, happiness is up to me.

I asked God to spare me pain, and God said “NO”.
He said suffering draws you apart from worldly cares
and brings yo closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow, and He said “NO”.
He said I must grow on my own, but He will prune me to make me fruitful.

I asked God to help me love others as much as He loves me,
And God said “Ah, finally you have the idea”!
